Once a part of the Camp Gilgal family, always a part of the Camp Gilgal family.

A Kawasaki for My Bar Mitzvah

by Joe (Age 12 | Tribe of Judah)

A boy asked his parents for a Kawasaki for his bar mitzvah.  The problem was that they did not know what a Kawasaki was or where to find it.  Still, they were determined to fulfill their son’s desire.  They went to the Orthodox rabbi for his approval.

When they got to the rabbi, they asked him what a Kawasaki was and where they could find one.  The rabbi didn’t know, but he suggested the Conservative rabbi.  The parents again asked the question.  This rabbi replied, “I do know what a Kawasaki is, but it is way too dangerous.  I would turn to the Reform rabbi for this one.”

Then they went to the Reform rabbi and asked the same question.  The rabbi replied, “Oh!  That’s a great present.  Sure, I have magazines and articles about motorcycles.  But, I have one question… What’s a Bar Mitzvah?”

Horseback Riding

by Anna (Age 12 | Tribe of Issachar)

One of our field trips this year was horseback riding.  It was lots of fun and many people have stories to tell about it.

For example, Strings’ horse was riding along and veered to the side and accidentally forgot she was there, so he banged into a tree.  Now Strings has a big nasty bruise on her knee that she likes to laugh at!

I had the biggest horse.  His name was Sunny.  I was kind of worried that I was going to have the biggest horse out of all of them.  As we went along I was praying the whole time because I kept seeing the horses in front of me almost trip and I did not want mine to trip and fall.  In the end I was okay because I trusted God.

These are some of the funny stories that happened when Camp Gilgal went horseback riding.

Mission Impossible

by Joe (Age 12 | Tribe of Judah)

One night, we were doing devotions when suddenly the Mission Impossible music played.  It was my first time playing, so I was quite excited.  Then we were in the Mishkan and we got our first clue.  We then decoded the clue, which was to go to the picnic tables.

On the way to the picnic tables, I was spotted by Twister.  That meant we had to go back to the boys’ cabin and then to the picnic tables.  Once we got there, we decoded the next clue, which was to go to the campfire ring.  We were almost spotted there but, instead of us, another tribe got caught!

Once we decoded that clue, we had to go to the fork in the road, which meant that we had to run for awhile.  I was almost to the guys’ cabin when we were caught by Pixie, but we were already there.

The next clue (once it was decoded) told us to go to the lean-to.  Once we were there we were all pretty tired.  That clue told us to go to the Mishkan!  We ran like mad beasts.  Then we got in and Spike flicked on the light and started yelling.  We won!

It was unbelievable.  Once everybody got there we were awarded 2 Pringles bottles and 50 points.  This is how my first M.I. was a memorable one.

RedSox and Spike Talking in Third Person

by Sarah B. (Age 9 | Tribe of Simeon)

One day, RedSox was talking to Spike.  Spike was talking in third person, so RedSox started talking in third person also.

This is what a conversation sounds like when RedSox and Spike are talking in third person:

RedSox: Spike, how are you?

Spike: Spike is doing well.  How is RedSox doing?

RedSox: RedSox is doing well also.  What is Spike doing for tribe time?

Spike: Spike is shooting archery.  What is RedSox doing for tribe time?

RedSox: RedSox is going to the lower initiative course.  RedSox has to go.  Bye!

Spike: Bye!

Later, RedSox and our tribe went to the lower initiative course.  It was sooooo cool because it was my first time going.  We were at the tire swing when we realized that RedSox was talking in third person again.  Skittlez (the ATL) jokingly began to speak in third person along with RedSox.  After that, the whole tribe began to talk in third person!

RedSox got and Skittlez got tired of the game, which was funny!  They made up a silly “punishment” like going to bed early so we would stop.  It worked.  At the end of the trip to the lower initiative course, I–I mean, Sarah–spoke in the third person until we got back to the cabin!

Interview with Skittlez

by Sarah H. (Tribe of Issachar)

Skittlez is one of the most awesome counselors.  Her favorite combinations of colors is rainbow.  Isn’t that cool or what?  Her favorite sport is an interesting sport, which is badminton.

She was an ordinary camper for one year and she went to Teen and Adventure Camp.  She found out about Camp Gilgal through Sneakers.  She loves all the staff, so she has no favorite staff.  She was an ATL at Camp Gilgal for one year.  The reason why she named herself Skittlez is because she went to the end of the rainbow and instead of finding a pot of gold she found it raining Skittlez.

Skittlez has two sisters and a twin.  Skittlez refused to tell me how old she is, but she did tell me that she is older than Detour and younger than Twister.  That’s my interview with Skittlez.

Current Events

by Sarah G. (Age 12 | Tribe of Manasseh)

Camp is always fun–especially when you have a cabin as good as mine!  I had Mercy, Shaina, and Sarah D.  Luckily, we have been going to camp for years, so all of us knew what we were doing.

One night, on July 4th, everyone thought we were going to play M.I.  My cabin was in bed for an hour waiting for M.I. music.  At 11:15 we got the picture that we weren’t playing.  The next night, we did play!

Our cabin got 3 clues out of 3 when everyone else got 6 out of 6, so ours were messed up somehow.  We came in third place anyways.  We got spotted 4 times, picked up another tribe’s clue, put it somewhere else, then realized that we accidentally did that and put it back.  When we went to the van for the third time, we hid under the van.  Sneakers was spotting and spotted us.  She yelled, “You’ve been spotted!” so we got out.

Something else that has happened is that there are 4 Sarahs this year, including me.  There was one in the other cabin and two in mine.

My activities were really fun this year.  In craft one day, Anna, Pixie, and I were talking about how Anna would make a good model.  RedSox happened to be walking by when I said Anna had blonde hair, blue eyes and was tan, tall, and thin.  RedSox (only hearing the last part about hair, eyes, etc.) asked quite innocently, “Are you guys talking about boys?”  We were laughing so hard!

One day, during dinner, Sarah said when you laugh really hard you burn calories.  During skit night, one of the judges, Posh Penelope (AKA Sneakers), said that our skit was funny and that she was laughing.  Then Shaina had to say her, “Did you know that laughing helps you lose weight?” fact.  And so Sweet Susie (AKA Twister) said, “Are you saying that she’s fat?”  So, instead of a 9, Sneakers gave us an 8.8.

I had a great time this year!

Making the Tribe Flag

by Sarah B. (Age 9 | Tribe of Simeon)

All the tribes worked very hard on making their tribe flag and choosing their tribe.

First, you had to choose what tribe you and your cabin were going to be.  My tribe was the Tribe of Simeon.

Then, you had to choose what color you wanted your flag to be.  Everybody wanted black, but in order to earn it you had to do something with your feet.  My tribe won the black flag because Rachel did a cool trick with only her feet.  The rest of the tribes did something with their feet and another body part, like their head.

Next, we decorated the flag.  My tribe painted a sword with fire around it.  It was awesome!

Manny vs. Benny

by Sarah D. (Age 11 | Tribe of Manasseh)

Let’s start with this… Manny is the equivalent to the Tribe of Manasseh, and Benny just represents the Tribe of Benjamin.  It all started on the tribe campout when Manasseh was innocently walking back to their campfire.  Benjamin and Manasseh ran into each other and decided to have a worship service.  And so we did.

It wasn’t until later that the war started.  Our cabin (“Manny”) felt like pranking somebody, so we walked over to Asher’s campsite and started to take their shoes.  Unfortunately, we got caught.  But we were still in the mood to prank, so even though “Benny” was nice to us we pranked them anyway.

Here’s what we did: We took their shoes and tied them to the lone tree.  They didn’t like it.  So, the next day, they didn’t speak to us at all.  At dinner they gave us flowers as a peace offering, but we saw right through their fake-out.  Sure enough, later that night, they stole our towels!

Our cabin is planning an attack, but it has yet to come to pass.  Let’s just say that people will be writing about it for years!

Shaina: What’s your favorite word/phrase?

Pixie: Supercalafragilisticexpialadocious

Shaina: What’s your favorite food?

And that was my interview with Pixie.

All About Speedy

by Joy (Age 10 | Tribe of Issachar)

Speedy has worked at Camp Gilgal for 10 years.  A special memory that he has about camp is when Rolo ran into a tree with his nose.

Unlike some people, Speedy thought up his name by himself.  The reason he thought of Speedy is because he like to do a lot of things quickly.  His favorite Camp Gilgal song is Hiney Mah Tov (campfire style).  Even when Camp Gilgal is up and running, Speedy is a missionary with Jews for Jesus. He has been a Jewish believer since 1988, which is 17 awesome years.

His three most favorite colors are steel blue, dark green, and burgundy.  His favorite band/singer is Steven Curtis Chapman.  The reason he likes them is because of the beat and the way they sound.  He also likes Lord of the Rings and he wants to see the movie Paperclips.

He has known about Camp Gilgal for 14 years.  Unfortunately, Speedy was never a camper.  I pity him.  Fortunately, Speedy LOVES pickles!  He especially likes the little green ones.

Big Night

by Victoria (Age 10 | Tribe of Issachar)

Big Night this year was very funny.  The Tribe of Manasseh dressed up like fat Malibu Barbie or a fat slob and a fat football player.  In the Tribe of Simeon they had nametags like Big Berry and Big Blue Berry.

The Tribe of Issachar dressed up like sumo wrestlers.  Some others did their hair really high and they looked like Who’s.  The other tribes just stuffed pillows up their shirts.  Let’s see what happens at next year’s Big Night!

Confessions of a Tall Blonde

by Anna (Age 12 | Tribe of Issachar)

We were in Crafts one time and making rain sticks.  Sarah G. and I were just done plastering ours and Craft was almost over, so we just sat down and talked with Pixie for a little.  We were looking at cut-outs of magazines to display on our rain sticks.  Sarah is really random sometimes.  She is from the Tribe of Manasseh and  is 12.  Suddenly, out of nowhere, Sarah started saying how tall, thin, tan, blonde hair and blue eyes were cool and how I would be a good model.

Suddenly, right when she was saying this, RedSox walked by and heard us talking.  When Sarah was saying about how tall and thin I am, RedSox said, “Are you guys talking about boys?”  It was really funny.  Sarah and I started laughing really hard.  Now you can see that a little misunderstanding can lead to a big joke that you can always remember and laugh about.

Dome Rotunda – A Whole New Cave

by Rachel (Age 11 | Tribe of Simeon)

This year for our first field trip, we went to Howe Caverns.  These caverns were outstanding!

Lester Howe’s cows discovered the deep cavern.  One day, instead of going under a shady tree, the cows stood in the pasture by a long, dark hole that blew out cold, cavern air.  Lester created tours many years ago and the tours were dangerous.  Finally, years passed and tours were remade so the dangers to the people and the cavern were eliminated.

The amazing part of the cavern was that the boats that were made in the mid-1900s were still being used.  I got scared when we were on the boat and it crashed into the walls.  I thought we were going to tip over!  Five minutes later I freaked out and thought we were going down a dark waterfall, but we were saved by the tour guide.

Our camp went down the long, 50 S-turns.  I freaked out in the closed spaces!  At the end, I saw the new project the Howe Caverns owners were working on–the great Dome Rotunda.  This dome hasn’t been seen by visitors for a century.  It’s said that there are treasures found inside.  I was excited to see it because it’s full of ancient history.  The bad part was that I froze and felt like I was in a freezer!

After, we went to an awesome park with cool obstacle courses.  Finally, we came back to camp.  I really want to go back.  Yuk-Yuk handed us our tickets and that was the end of the adventure.  I still have my ticket to remember the great trip!!

Game-a-palooza

by Eddie

After a nice, hot dinner, we went to the cabin and got a nice surprise.  We were going to have an all-camp evening activity.

I had never played the first game before.  It was called cat and mouse.  I was confused and angry because some people were hogging all the time.

The best game–or, at least I thought it was–was Hadov Rotz.  It was a game just like Sharks and Minnows.  Unfortunately, something bad happened to me and lots of other people.  I tripped over someone’s foot and twisted my ankle.

That sounds worse than it really was, because then we had a relay race.  I couldn’t let my tribe down, so I tried my hardest and our cabin won!  So, just remember to be careful.

How Cold Are You?

by Gabriella (Age 12 | Tribe of Issachar)

Have you ever been to Howe Caverns?  Well, we went there as the first field trip.  It was fun!

We walked on the cat-walks over the river Styx, the river that carved out the caverns.  We walked under Balancing Rock, walked past Rocky Mountains, Solomon’s Temple, the Bronze Room, the Pipe Organs, and the Bridal Altar.  We took a ride down the river Venus and went down the Winding Way.  But the really interesting part is its history.

The caves are named after Lester Howe, who supposedly found the caverns.  The true finders were his cows.  Cows like to sit in the shade, but Lester’s cows stayed in the same clump of bushes every day.  One day he went over to the bushes and felt cool air coming out of the ground (a natural form of air conditioning).  He got a rope, tied it to a tree, jumped down, and discovered Howe Caverns.

For the next two years, he searched the caverns.  For the next 20 years, he gave 8-hour tours of the cave for $2 a person.  In the tours they put thick clothing on and had to wade through 29-degree water and 59-degree air.  They walked under Balancing Rock, eventually over Rocky Mountains, and under tunnels to Solomon’s Temple.  The Bronze Room in Solomon’s Temple is the biggest room in the caverns.  It’s also the midpoint of the tour, and there Lester Howe had lunch.

At the Pipe Organs, if you blow into a certain hole it will come out of the rocks that look like (you guessed it!) pipe organs in an echo-ey way.  Back then you could break off parts of the Pipe Organs, so there are big chunks missing.

Then they would go into a canoe and boat ride down the river Venus, turn around, and go back a different way.  They would stop at the Bridal Altar, which is really only a heart-shaped stepping stone.  Legend says that if you are of age and you step on the stone you will get married within one year, or if a husband and wife stand on it they will have a long and lasting relationship.  Over 400 couples got married in Howe Caverns, but the first was Howe’s daughter.

Then they would go down the Winding Way (50 s-like curves combined), turn around, and go out.  Eventually, Howe went bankrupt and sold the caverns.  After years of changing hands, Howe Caverns was bought by Howe Caverns, Inc (ironically).  That is how it became the way it is today!

Interview with Detour

by Simone (Age 9 | Tribe of Simeon)

I thought about it for awhile and then got the idea that I could interview Detour.  She has lived in 1,000,000 different countries because her parents are missionaries and they move around a lot.  Her favorite country that she has lived in is Germany.

Detour’s favorite book of the Bible is Psalms.  I like it too.  Speaking of books, she likes books with cool titles.

Detour said her favorite Veggie-Tales show is the sing-along.  Her favorite fruit is raspberries.  Her favorite ice cream flavor is cookies ‘n cream.

Her favorite part about camp is camping out and lighting the fire.  The worst part is getting bitten by bugs.  She has 37 bug bites.  I have 1…4…7…14…18…23!

When Detour is older, she wants to work in an orphanage in Africa and write books on the side.

Interview with Frizz

by Noah (Tribe of Benjamin)

I interviewed Frizz and I found out some pretty neat stuff.  Frizz said that her name is Frizz because her hair is wild and crazy.

Frizz said her favorite drink is green tea and her favorite fruit is star fruit.  She said her favorite game is called Catch Phrase.  Her favorite color is peach.  And, finally, Frizz’s favorite TV show is a show called Lost, which she thinks is an amazing show.

Frizz is 19 years old.  Those are some facts about Frizz, a crazy but awesome counselor.

Interview with Heart

by Kyle (Age 10 | Tribe of Benjamin)

I interviewed Heart and I got good answers.  Heart said her kids’ names were Ryan and Alyssa.  Ryan is 14 and Alyssa is 4.  She also said her favorite food was salad and her favorite color was green.

Heart became a nurse because she liked helping people.  She has one brother.  Her favorite part of camp is Tabernacle and her job.  I think Heart is a good nurse and I hope you do too.

Interview with Kodak

by Joey (Age 9 | Tribe of Benjamin)

Hopefully Kodak will be here next year.  She’s been a counselor at Camp Gilgal for one year.  Kodak loves the cute, little campers.

At FOB, Kodak loves to sleep!  Kodak’s favorite tribe is her own.  She loves monkeys and penguins.  Her favorite memory is her campout on the basketball court with her tribe.

Interview with RedSox

by Heather (Age 11 | Tribe of Simeon)

RedSox is a counselor named after her favorite baseball team, the Red Sox.  RedSox thinks Camp Gilgal is great!  RedSox loves campfire.  Her campers thought Simeon was the best name.

She likes the game Hadov Rotz because it’s fun to get chased by the bears.  Hadov Rotz is like the game Sharks and Minnows, but with bears and salmon instead.

The first time she came to camp was Teen Camp 2002.  Her parents made her come, but then she liked it and kept coming back.  Her first camp counselor was Twister.  She liked Twister…she was (and still is) awesome!!

Interview with Rolo

by Daniel (Age 11 | Tribe of Asher)

A few days ago, I interviewed Rolo.  He said he started as a tribe leader in 2003.  He is 37 years old.  His favorite colors are forest green and navy blue.  He also has a lot of favorite bands.

Rolo likes playing mystery games.  He likes to eat sugar, junk food, and pizza–like me–and he hates tomatoes.

I interviewed him because he’s cool.  He’s the man!

Interview with Sneakers

by Cynthia (Tribe of Simeon)

My article is about Sneakers.  I asked her many questions and will write her answers in sentence form.

Sneakers named herself Sneakers because she loves sports and activities and stuff like that.  Her favorite thing at camp is evening activity.  She is in a cabin with Detour and Strings.

Sneakers lives in New Jersey and her favorite colors are blue, black, and pink.  Her least favorite color is orange.  She wishes she had sneakers in different colors–she only has pink and white.  Her favorite brand of sneakers is Nike.

Her brothers’ and sister’s names are Levi, Josiah, and Simone.  She likes Levi, Josiah, and Simone 100%.  She loves me and Jesus.  She likes anything except bugs.

Interview With Spike

by Joshua

Spike is a 21-year old camp counselor.  He is the oldest of 6 children, having 3 brothers and 2 sisters.  Spike attends Hunter College in New York City, where he likes watching movies, reading, and walking around New York.

Spike’s favorite move is The Godfather, but he likes many movies.  Sushi is Spike’s favorite food, and his favorite type of ice cream is mint chocolate chip.  Spike’s favorite band used to be 5-Iron Frenzy, but since they broke up he has liked Over the Rhine.  Spike describes himself as “enthusiastic” and loves camp.

Interview With Sushi

by Arthur (Age 12 | Tribe of Judah)

I am interviewing a counselor named Sushi.  He has been a counselor for only 3 weeks.  He is twenty years old.  Sushi is getting more involved with Jews for Jesus.  Speedy convinced him to work as a counselor in Camp Gilgal.  So far he has made a lot of friends and very few enemies (if any).

His favorite part of camp this year is being with all the campers, even if they can get out of hand sometimes.  But he’s always there to put them back in order.  So far he is the best counselor!

Sushi’s favorite hobbies are watching anime, cooking, weightlifting, plus martial arts.  Also, in his free time he surfs the web, talks to his friends over the phone, and loves to sleep.  Sushi loves to eat sushi during lunch or for dinner.  His favorite color is green, and his favorite number is 8.

Interview with Twister

by Leo (Tribe of Asher)

Twister’s favorite food is caribou marsala.  Her favorite place is Canada.  Twister lives in New York–Manhattan, specifically.  Twister is in the middle of the age 3 and 43.  She has one older sister.  Twister has been an assistant director for 3 years.

Twister’s favorite thing at camp is that after campfire she likes to kill the fire.  Twister saw a tornado/twister when she was little that picked her up, so that is how she got her camp name.  Twister had a dog named Ignate and it died by chasing a frisbee and accidentally jumping off a cliff.

Interview with Yuk-Yuk

by Josiah (Tribe of Asher)

Every other year I did an interview I basically asked the same questions.  But this time when I interviewed Yuk-Yuk, I had to ask some different questions because he doesn’t have a lot of favorite things.  For example, when I asked him his favorite color he said, “fawn”.  I thought that was a pretty interesting answer.

He goes to college at Marymount Manhattan College and he said he has lots of favorite bands.  He said his favorite part about camp is spending time with his cabin at tribe time.  His favorite soda is Cherry Coke, his favorite fruit is mango, and his favorite food is chicken parmigiana.

Frizz came up with his camp name Yuk-Yuk for him.  And, just so you know a little about what he looks like, he has curly brown hair and greenish-brown eyes.

Issachar Devos

by Lauren (Age 11 | Tribe of Issachar)

Every night we have devotions (“devos”) in our cabin.  We do different things to get the point of the devotion than just reading the Bible. One night we had devos out under the stars.  The subject was not to gossip, so we played telephone.  We did different messages each time and they always came out different (just like gossip does).

The most exciting devo we had was last night.  Detour was talking about how God knows what is going to happen in your life next before you do.  Then she asked us how we felt about it.  While this was happening, a teeny tiny bug started crawling across the floor.  Well, Victoria was trying to kill it with her shoe while also trying not to interrupt the devotion.  While “not” interrupting, she couldn’t really keep from laughing, so she made this face that was obviously really funny to Gabriella.  LAUGH ATTACKS!  She just burst out laughing and literally couldn’t stop.  She swayed back and forth, back and forth with a hilarious smile on her face.

At first, everybody thought she would stop and just stared at her.  But she didn’t stop–it just got worse.  We asked if she needed to go out and take a breath, then BOOM she laughed even harder.  Pretty soon a lot of us started laughing.  The counselors, Detour and Sneakers, just stared at us and tried to get us to stop.  By this time, Gabriella was rolling on the floor.

Pretty soon Detour and Sneakers decided to tell her to laugh into her pillow, so she did that for about 2 minutes.  I had never before seen somebody laugh as long as she did.  Ha ha ha!

Joke Stop

by Zach (Age 10 | Tribe of Asher)

Why don’t cannibals eat weather forecasters?

Because they give them wind.

Why did the bubblegum cross the road?

Because it was stuck to the chicken’s foot.

M.I. Fakeout!

by Mercy (Age 11 | Tribe of Manasseh)

Every year we play a game called Mission Impossible (“M.I.”).  Last year we played on the Fourth of July, so we thought that we would probably play that night again this year.  They also had a staff meeting and moved Yuk-Yuk’s car in front of the girls’ cabin.  We were almost 100% sure we were going to play M.I., so our tribe got on all of our black clothes and laid in bed waiting… and waiting… and waiting for the M.I. song to start playing.

We were wrong!  We ended up waiting until 11:00 or so, then we finally gave up and fell asleep.  Frizz, Kodak, and Pixie all tricked us into thinking that we were playing M.I.

The next night we actually played M.I. and we had no clue that we were going to play because Frizz said that she was in the Nurse’s Office but she was really planning M.I.!  When we heard the music, we were fooled!

Phrases of Speedy

by Joshua (Tribe of Judah)

You know you’ve been to Camp Gilgal East when you know these phrases:

  • When is a drawer not a drawer?  When it is ‘ajar’.
  • Tossed like salad
  • How do you spell askew?  A-S-H-E-R!
  • You did pretty good, but there were some infractions
  • You are the second mouse!
  • Yeah boy!
  • You’re my “brudda”

Talent Night!

by Simone (Age 9 | Tribe of Simeon)

Talent Night is one of those things you only have once a year.  Each tribe has to make up a skit.  This year my cabin decided to do Job.  Rachael was Job.   Cynthia was daughters and cattle.  Simone (me) was the devil, and Sarah was God.  So we made up a 3-minute skit.

The Tribe of Issachar did one where they were all pretending it was past lights out and there was thunder and lightning.  So Strings told them that when she gets scared she sings.  So they started the song and, while they were singing, Twister came in and asked, “What are you doing?”

The Tribe of Manasseh did one where they all dressed up in black and did the fruit of the Spirit with the lights off.  They did a really cool dance.

The guys’ cabins did skits too, but I liked these the best.
